How do you name your projects?
I feel like I spend 23 hours a day rattling my brain to think of names for all my silly project ideas - and luckily for me my struggle to think of good project names is probably the only reason I haven't gone bankrupt buying new domains yet.
So how do you think of names? Do you use a system or a tool?
My 'system' isn't very robust. I just try writing down a list of words or titles related to my new project then see which domains are available, then if there is a domain available ill check to see if the socials are available too, using a tool like namecheckr and if it is pull the trigger.
I also make use of suggested domains on registrar websites for inspiration.
Sometimes I come up with a name by translating a single word into German or French. For example, Alles means "Everything" in German, and it's a service where you have one account (Your AllesID) for tons of products.
Interesting! I like this idea, its a great way to have a unique sounding name without adding io or ly at the end :P
I like to combine 2 words that most describe the project, and is catchy at the same time. I find that this kind of name will sell itself. It has been working great for me so far.
Example of my project names:
-WebSheets.co (The app is about creating websites from Google Sheets - WIP)
-MakanRescue.com (Makan is food in Malay language. The app is about Rescuing surplus food.)
-MahramCheck.com (Mahram is an Islamic term. The app is about Checking About that particular Islamic ruling called Mahram.)
I agree that a good name helps sell the product, that's why I also like to describe what the project is or does in the name.
Using two words like this is smart, not just for the reasons you give but also it makes finding domains and social handles easier, whilst letting you come up with a creative and unique name that is also descriptive.
