Do people really like dark mode?
And will they pay for it?
I am building a publishing platform (https://telescope.ac — alpha version of not yet finished landing page). And I suddenly understood that dark mode is kind of trend right now, and it's slowly appearing everywhere.
A text editor seems to be a good place to implement a dark mode, but do you think people like it that much to actually pay for it? I always prefer light modes, and I think that dark modes in 99% of cases lack details and doesn't look that good as the light one. What's your opinion on that? Can you give an example of a perfectly implemented dark mode?
Bright interfaces almost always look the best. However, dark mode is more comfortable for the eyes once you already know the interface of websites that you're frequently visiting.
I do like dark mode and yes, I would and have paid for it. I prefer dark mode mostly because I work at night. Of course, it has to have a contrast ratio that makes it easier for the eyes than the light version, otherwise it defies its purpose.
For my IDE always dark theme regardless of time of day.
As Alina I only use dark mode when I work while it is dark. Now in summer that's not the case, but in winter I use it quite a lot. Not sure if I would pay for it. Not if it is the only feature I'd get.
You can take a look at Apple's interface guidelines on how to design for dark mode. It's not as easy as changing white to black and you're done. For iOS 13 they're introducing a dynamic palette with different colors for light and dark. You need to consider contrast between your interface colors, things like text fields and buttons and legibility of your different text variations.
The dark mode is nice to have, but it's should be prioritised in the feature list, imo. Yet I always switch to dark mode when I have this option.
You can also direct users to install the DarkReader extension if they complain on the lack of support. It does a decent-enough job for most websites.
