Advice for ProductHunt

Hey,

I'm launching my project on ProductHunt tomorrow.

Does it matter at which time I launch for ProductHunt, and do you have other general advice?

The Product Hunt day starts at 00:00 San Francisco time. It's usually recommended to post at that time to get maximum exposure.

@bcye Also you can use this handy tool to create PH assets for your launch. Plus it has a built-in PH clock. https://previewhunt.com/

Here are the tricks:

  1. Use previewhunt.com to preview your submission. It's super important!
  2. Use GIFs and clickbaity headlines. It helps you up that algorithm!
  3. Add something controversial to it. It sounds bad, but the more debate you can get going on in the comments, the better the algorithm ranks you.
  4. Post at 0:00 SF time to beat other submissions.

Best of luck!

Thanks. What exactly do you mean with something controversial? Is there some easy way to generate gifs?

@bcye Dinuka taught me this trick - on one of his launches, he added a small jab at Donald Trump.

Not recommended, but it caused so many comments that it shot him up to #1 and at that point, the positive feedback drowned out the negative comments.

It's a "the ends justify the means" situation.

In my Makerlog 2.0 launch, I added a slightly controversial tagline - "the biggest community for makers shipping together" or "the best". I can't recall, but it helped boost rankings. They changed it though.

Just do anything that causes conversation - the PH algorithm loooooves comments.

About gifs, there isn't sadly. I used reveal.js to make a nice slideshow with CSS for my Makerlog 2.0 launch. It worked out well.

Is there any recommendation on the day itself?

Be generally receptive to comments, be online for the flood of support requests, and be active on Twitter welcoming and onboarding people.

Also, livestream the launch - it makes launches much bigger events and you'll have an audience supporting you through it.

And power naps. Depending on your timezone, you probably are not getting much sleep if you're where I live haha. Take naps and come back to manage the flood.

That's pretty much how I launch.

@sergio its 24hours of craziness or even more?

@manurueda 12-24 hours of absolute madness. Depends on the launch, of course, but it can be a while before you lay your head on a bed for a bit.

We had a similar discussion some weeks ago: https://getmakerlog.com/discussions/ayoprez-how-was-your-first-publication-in-producth

I gave back my experiences there. Maybe that helps ;-)
