Subdomian vs new domain for a product?

Hi all, I have the domain prototypr.io, and also a new project called UI Sounds, that currently sits in uisounds.prototypr.io.

HOwever i also own uisounds.io - do you think it would be a good move to use uisounds.io instead of the subdomain?

The reason I went with subdomain is because it's part of the same overall project, and prototypr.io already has decent SEO.

Thanks for any feedback!

Long term I think you will want it to be it's own domain, assuming you plan to keep it long term.

Own domain is better unless your main product definitely has the focus.

At NameRobot we have separate domains for each service. Even if they are all connected somewhere. Just login / registration is so much easier to implement / seperate it.

As an example, NameRobot includes

  • NameRobot www.namerobot.com
  • NameScore www.namescore.io
  • Namefruits www.namefruits.com … and more

At NameScore and Namefruits the app is for example available as subdomain and the page has www.

  • reports.namescore.io -> www.namescore.io
  • juicer.namefruits.com -> www.namefruits.com

that wouldn't be possible with your solution.

In addition your service can be sold later with an own domain much easier.

Domain for sure. It doesn't cost much and adds a huge trust factor to your users.

For small products, I think you can start with subdomain if you don't want to buy too many. Ultimately, each product should have its own domain.

You don't get any SEO benefits from your main domain by using a subdomain. Better to use a subfolder or your new domain.
