How can Makerlog improve?

Hi everyone,

I've gathered quite an amount of feedback over the course of the past few months, and I'm looking for more. As I build the roadmap, I'm dreaming things up and I want to hear your ideas and thoughts. I really appreciate any feedback on feature ideas, big-picture stuff, or anything that's on your mind!

idea #1: post formatting…

I'd love to see Makerlog become a little more mobile-friendly. It works, but it can be clunky to add tasks, or give praise for someone else's log.

Thanks for creating this great community Sergio!

Oh, that's definitely in plans. I want to create a mobile app.

Might be more tech support related but why can't I change the status of tasks once I make them? For example, turning in progress to done state. Is there a specific way to do them?

I suppose generally also have notifications near the end of the day? I often keep forgetting to update, as I have a lot of sources I need to update every day, such as my daily journal and tracking my Quora stats that it just slips my mind on Makerlog.

On that note, what about recurring tasks that have to be done every day? I'm adding that to my project getartemis.app.

Any plans to monetize?

Have an open roadmap on Notion or something similar, I'd like to see where it goes.

Open source it like dev.to? Always nice to see more open communities. Plus people can find bugs and contribute back. You can even have your roadmap directly on GitHub, which people already have accounts to, so they can easily comment, add issues, pull requests etc. Personal opinion but I really think we should bring back open source from the power of mega corporations and make it what it once was, more collaborative and grassroots/community focused.

You can do this in getmakerlog.com/tasks. Hover over them :P

Thanks for the input!

How about makerlog desktop notifications. Say if the user didn't log anything one day, send them a notification about their current streak, number of tasks in to-do. Sort of like inspiration from their steak to get some work done. Motivational stuff will also be a good boost, notifications like "You are in the top XX% of maker's community today with XX tasks completed".

I've thought about that, and eventually settled with an upcoming email digest and notifications for streaks. I've tried DN for previous projects and usage was very low.

Just a thought: An open list of tags such that interested individuals can explore on the basis of hashtags?

Great idea. I think explore needs some work.

I would love desktop notifications. There are lots of things on Makerlog that I'd like to be noticed about but aren't important enough for tons of emails 😉

A basic version wouldn't be hard to make, just a teeny bit of JS when it fetches new notifications

I don't seem to be able to remove Trello webhooks, so a feature concerning that would be much appreciated. Otherwise I love using Makerlog, great job 👍

I've been sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo interested in making a chrome extension and a basic question with just a "do today" screen.

Yeah trello webhooks need the ability to be deleted. I've been putting that off for a while cause i've been busy… will do sometime soon.

Might be…. Creating a paid section too with added support and featured app also exclusive contents might be coooool

OMG Please make a "Do Today" tag! I'd love to separate them from general todos…

Some special Do Today status, maybe a sun in the to-do circle 😆

Makes me think, can you add anchor navigation in the url for the Projects page ? This way we can access the relevant category tab by just typing enter. To be more precise: if an anchor is present in the url, it jumps to the relevant section (each tab having an HTML id corresponding to the anchor).

To be honest I think its already great. I really love the new UI 😍

One thing that can be improved is this comments section. I don't understand who's talking to whom. So an indented thread like Reddit, Hacker News or WIP would be great :)

I'd like emails or some way to get notifications outside of the website. I always forget to check since there is nothing reminding me too

Emails is in plans for sure. Digests too

Few minor things…

  • The "Write something you did today" textbox font is too large or the text area is to small. It's hard to write out tasks when you can only see like 6 words at a time.
  • Hard to tell what tasks you praised or didn't praise.
  • It would be nice to be able to see all "ToDo" tasks on the tasks page, instead you have to manually click through all the tag filters to see your tasks.
  • On user profile pages, the name, streak, tasks, followers and praise content is sitting at the very top of the "blurred" bar rather than centered vertically.
  • why can't I click on "followers" to see who I follow, is there any place to see who I follow?

Changing the status of a task from "to-do" or "in progress" to done means hovering over that particular task. Doing that is a bit difficult when on a mobile device. I do it by using a wireless mouse. Maybe making it so Makerlog on mobile devices works just as good as on a desktop machine.

Oh, and the ability to remove Trello webhooks would be great!

I was experimenting a little with the design this evening, what do you think? 🤔

looks dope ❤️🔥🔥

Why is the activity graph stuck to the header? You should align it with the task pane to the left.

And I'd suggest adding a visible applaud button to every task. Right now, it's only shown when somebody hovers on it, which doesn't encourage engagement. And sometimes, the button doesn't work too.

Two ideas I recently thought of: 1) When a product gets shipped this could be broadcasted out in a special way within the web UI.

2) One thing I found interesting from PHs makers was the concept of interests groups, an idea for this would be to integrate with some of the MakersKitchens slack communities and have webhooks so that any updates from makerlog users who belong to that community get posted there. This allows to find and follow other makers who share the same interests as you.

  1. Send browser notification when someone gets a notification in getmakerlog
  2. Get a new domain name

Writing here so I don't forget, if there is a preferred way for suggestions let me know.

  1. Auto post to Twitter your completed tasks for the day (should be an option)
  2. Auto generated email for makers who have joined but haven't been active in a while (should help with retention and #togetherWeMake) (PS. max three emails in different timeframes. Don't want to spam people and have them use @LeaveMeAloneApp on MakerLog :)
  3. A way to search for makers and products (by keywords or advanced filtering)
