Thoughts about Namecheap?

I currently run 3 websites through Namecheap, including my bigger project, Venture Cost. From time to time the server is not responding, sending random errors or just takes over 20 seconds to load. I have contacted support more than 10 times about this, but they say everything is fine.

I did like Namecheap a lot when I first discovered them, but with time my services has been running slower and slower.

What is your opinion about Namecheap, is it good enough or are there any new friendly budget server providers out there?

I only buy domains via Namecheap and bought a wildcard SSL cert via NC. Now. Their interface sucks. I had problems with their UI even with changing name servers. I'd recommend switching to Heroku. Namecheap is for domains. App hosting should be given to app hosting provider. Or digitalocean/linode if you want to set things up by urself.

Oh yeah, their UI is like a maze… I'll definitely look into Heroku! I don't think setting things up by myself is a priority as of right now since the app itself is fairly simple on the backend. PHP, MySQL and a FTP-server and I'll be good to go 👌 Thanks for the recommendation!

No FTPing with Heroku. For static/media files i recommend digitalocean Spaces.

Ping me somewhere if you need help with heroku.

Looked into a bit, and Heroku looks a bit out of my league right now. Both Linode and DigitalOcean look amazing. They seem to have the same price, for the same performance. What's your personal opinion about these two, why would you pick DigitalOcean over Linode? Thanks a ton 🙏

I'd say studying how to set up nginx/db and other stuff is a huge burden. heroku takes it away from u. This eats a lot of your time, believe me on this. heroku has free plan unless u want SSL(which u need ofc). so prepare to pay 7$/mo for hobby plan. pay 5$ for digital ocean spaces files hosting and you are good. Also, you can scale easily if needed. I'd invest some time into figuring out heroku instead of constant fucking around with configs 😂 of all kinds, backups and then "What should i do when i have product-hunt-effect on my site". Heroku will have answer for that. DO/linode - u'll figure it out on ur own. Database will cost u when u are beyond hobby plan, yes. This is price for not thinking of all it.

no difference between linode/digitalocean that i see. For VPS i prefer linode. Maybe i like their green theme more maybe :) There are some other interesting features in DO, but I haven't benefited from that.

I've only heard good things about Linode on Twitter, even Pieter praises them. I will try their cheapest setup and scale when the time comes 👌 DO did seem to have a lot more features, but as you said it's nothing I would use either… Thank you so much, Konstantin! 🎉

I think DO has two things:

  • Spaces - great product
  • Huge marketing budget that causes hype - good thing for them to have 😂

Linode is good. Love them

I have used linode 7-8 years back, so can't really compare how it is now. But I do use Heroku and DigitalOcean a lot.

If you need to host your own code, heroku is easy enough to setup. But it only has ephemeral storage for files. You would have to host your files some place else. SSL is free (not free for wildcard though) if your DNS is hosted on cloudflare and you have "flexible" setting in cloudflare.

DigitalOcean takes less than a minute to start running your own linux server and now has added a lot more new features like floating ip, spaces, etc. I have a few blogs running on WP.

If you really want cheaper options and location of the server isn't a big concern, check out Hetzner (https://www.hetzner.com/). The cloud servers in hetzner is much cheaper than digitalocean, but similar performance. The only problem is the servers are in Germany and if your customers are primarily in the US, the network latency will be a problem.

I have domains under Namecheap, Godaddy, and Porkbuns. No matter what domain, I do not host under them 😆 . I host it under DigitalOcean or run the Nameserver DNS under Cloudflare and let them handle everything.

Lots of stuff above that's a bit over my head, but I use Namecheap and DigitalOcean, and I've yet to have any issues. Porkbun looks like it's worth a try so far as registrars go.

I feel like I've convinced so many people to try Porkbun, I should really join their affiliate program but each commission is < $1 so I'm not bothered 😝

Just using it for domains. Shitty interface but support is good 😛

Does it matter which provider you have for your domains when it comes to speed, or are they all the same?

NameServer speed is more important than registrar.

^I don't think the registrar has any bearing whatsoever on speed - they're just handling registrations, like a middle man between you and a registry (VeriSign, for example). But related to what Konstantin said, I suppose there could be a difference in speed among registrars when it comes to nameservers updating, or things like that.

If you are not familiar with running your own server and you need just a hosting for a static site or PHP/MySQL with a basic traffic, don't go the VPS-way. There are many hosting options for this stack.

PS: I don't like NameCheap's slow UI, too.

I'm talking about the speed of their UI. Like rendering the dashboard. For example, Porkbun seems to be noticeably faster for me. But I'm still using NameCheap anyway.

One of the best registrars out there. Interface is ass but they're great.

🐷Another porkbun convert here! They are great.

I've never used Namecheap for hosting, but after @jivings recommended Porkbun, I bought my first domain on them this weekend after having been with Namecheap since 2008.
