What are the do's and don't's for creating a new product?
The first thing you have to remember is that each product has a different design, roadmap, strategy, and launch. This means that the “do’s and don’t’s” of product creation will vary from company to company. Furthermore, the position you have within creating a new product always has its own set of micro do’s and do not’s. That being said, I am going to approach your question from the standpoint of Product Managers, because the success of a product will fall into the hands of the PM before the buck passes on to the executives and stakeholders.
Even though every product have different design, roadmap… but they all follow the same rule book. And few of them are listed below (spoiler alert: they is no such rule book as I know about) 😂
Do
- Follow the MVP approach
- Work in collaborative env.
- Try running design sprints
- Create a design system for your product
- Follow me on twitter 😝
Don't
- Ship fully build feature in one go
- Ignore user feedback
@mittalyashu covered the basics that everyone will respond with, so let's get to another perspective.
It's 2019. Most products you can come up with off the top of your head already exists to some extent, which makes the MVP approach less viable, but still a good option as it might provide some good feedback early on. However, if it's a original idea, make sure your project has made progress before showing it to the world, people are very quick to copy great ideas.
Do make products that you have passion for, something that solves real problems, not some unnecessary crap that will milk your followers/friend for money. Last project I saw was @marckohlbrugge's project that is a chat that charges you per character typed. (But, but, it's a social experiment? No! It trades the creators reputation for cash)
Do
- Choose the right product to work on. Don't waste yours and everyone else's time making products that will die after the release hype is over.
- Emphasize on what your product is solving
Don't
- Ignore user feedback
- Listen to everyone's advice, even if they have thousands of followers. Some people are very opinionated and their advice does not apply to everyone even if they think so.
This is great. Especially the passion part- it's important to choose something you really care about.
