How to monetize a Wordpress plugin?

What you think is the best approach to monetize a Wordpress plugin? Go freemium with limitations? Or don't do free version at all? I feel that freemium is a good way to promote your product but I would like to hear your opinion on the topic.

thank you

I think it all depends. From personal experience, I've bought some plugins recently without even going for the free version first. And some don't have a free version. Mostly because they solve such a unique problem and offer the only or one of very few available options to solve the problem. And when that's the case, I feel I am more inclined to shell out the $. Also when it's a money-making solution for me rather than a cute thing to have. Pretty much nice to have vs must-have functionality is the final deciding factor for me to pay or not.

I'll list a few of the recent purchases as an example. Easy Pricing Tables - Paid. The free version does not offer a good solution for memberships. Also no advanced toggles for something like yearly vs monthly plans.

Then WP Simple Pay - Paying for one of the top plans because it offers Stripe integration. And well, not much needed to be said about that lol. Btw, It was WP Simple Pay that got me to pay for the Easy Pricing Tables because WP Simple Pay has an integration and they mention them on their website. This collab worked beautifully for me.

I'd have limits or watermark and pay to remove them

I recently did an interview with Igor a Wordpress plugin developer - perhaps that helps a bit: https://growthhacklist.com/interviews/building-wordpress-plugins
