Are there any ways to get an abandoned twitter account?

There is an abandoned account that has the same username as the name of my project. It would be cool to get it, but the owner does not get in touch.

Has anyone encountered such a situation? Did you manage to solve it?

You could tell twitter about it but IIRC they only do this when the account isn't following anyone, seems like a follow bot, or just a username placeholder account.

It'll be tough. Sometimes if you get in touch with the owner, they'll quote an outrageous price, but you can try.

Twitter answer

— Thanks for getting in touch. At this time we are unable to accommodate individual requests for inactive or suspended usernames. We appreciate your understanding in the matter.

@andrey_torus Yeah expected response. I think it is easier to maybe just use a variation of the name. (for example, if your project is called starbucks, use 'getstarbucks', 'trystarbucks', 'starbucksofficial' etc)

@tobe Yes. I'm using @…com now.

I also have an inactive account I'm trying to get a hold of. Twitter has been absolutely no help. I can't believe they don't have a process for this. Best bet is to get a hold of someone who works there and see if they have any insights.

I think they just don’t want to deal with cases in case the owner of that account "wakes up" 🙁

I've had success with this several times - both for my own project and for client's businesses. Basically you need a registered trademark for the words in the Twitter handle. If you've got that then you can go ahead and let Twitter know, produce the details and they'll transfer it across to you. Without the trademark it won't happen.

Thank you! This is great info!

I was wondering if a trademark would lift a twitter finger. LOL

There is no way but this is just twitter.

  1. contact the user, you can find their email to their username by forgetting password
  2. offer a price that you want the twitter handle
  3. other than that you need to be creative at naming your twitter handle

  1. There's this dusty old web service I once built, it's called Username Alert. It lets you submit a username that's taken, and e-mails you once it becomes available. Should still be working :)
