VPS Pricing Comparison: Hetzner - DigitalOcean (not an affiliate)

You probably know DigitalOcean and see it as your go to hosting provider, but I think there's a much better one few know.

| Metric | Hetzner | DigitalOcean | | --- | --- | --- | | CPU-Cores | 1 | 1 | | RAM | 2GB | 1GB | | Disk-Space | 20GB | 25GB | | Bandwith | 20TB | 1TB | | Company Location (GDPR, you know) | EU | US | | Price | 2.9€/m | 5$/m |

This is part of my new blog I set up today on a Hetzner VPS. I recommend you to check out, how I set it up, or read this post on my blog.

You might have a point there… Looks pretty decent. How does it look in comparison on 'bigger' packages?

How easy is it to upgrade to a bigger package?

this is their pricing. It's just as easy as on DO, with the same policy (If you upgrade metrics + disk space you can't downgrade)

It's even worse on bigger packages. Their 8€ outranks DO's 20$. The pricing stays more or less 50% of DO's

All in all, their dashboard looks and works just like the DO one.

I wonder more if the set up is as easy using Laravel Forge as a management solution… @bcye

Hetzner user here, but not on VPS.

I did quick math and decided to go have a dedicated server a few years ago when they had 0 setup fee. ~€50eur a month - 64gb, 8 cores CPU, 1TB HDD. Projects are running using docker-compose. More than enough to run many containers.

Plus, you can easily share resources between containers (rabbitmq for example)

Worked well so far, but does require some initial admin time. It's all automated with ansible + traefik for load balance and automated docker container discovery.

Sounds like an interesting setup and very profitable if you run a lot of projects

@bcye I wrote a short blog post a few years about this setup, it's high-level, and a bit out of date (no traeffic there) though.

Sounds nice! I'll try it, but I find it hard to stop using Digital Ocean. I've worked with Amazon Lightsail (3.5$), but the cheapest one I found was SkySilk (2$ VPS). The small letter here is that the 2$ VPS is only ipv6 so if you want a normal IP you have to pay 2$ more, anyways it could work for you (like a server to server communication, or just background processing), my affiliate link is for 25$ if you guys want to try it https://www.skysilk.com/ref/Bm0rgGydCL If you don't like affiliate links (as me) you just can check the page itself https://www.skysilk.com/cloud/pricing/#classId=Standard§ion=1L
