How do you sell your digital products (not SaaS)?

I know a lot of people are very fond of Gumroad for selling digital goodies. Have you tried any alternatives?

Personally, I tried full-static low-code approach for Songcorder. This was with Webflow, Netlify, Stripe Checkout (client-only), Zapier, and Mailchimp.

It wasn't probably as much fun as setting up a page on Gumroad, but the fees are smaller this way.

What's your experience?

Paddle is a good alternative. You can list different types of products -- individual products and subscriptions.

In the individual product case, I have a bit of experience (Makerlog Ads packages are hooked up to that!).

It works very well. You can select fulfillment options, be it with webhooks or any other mechanism you desire. The fees are high, but they handle sales tax compliance for you and other neat things.

What does sales tax compliance entail?

@gray Paddle covers charging VAT/GST automatically and does all the tax reporting necessary. They act as a merchant of record on your behalf. This basically means that not you are charging customers, but Paddle is. This way your only customer would be Paddle, which pays you.

@scholz ahh got it thanks! I see how that is much easier then!

I use quickbooks for accounting so it’s not really much overhead for me cos it syncs transaction quite easily …but yeah quickbooks is like £24 a month

There's Podia and Payhip as well. Don't know much about them besides that Podia charges a monthly fee with no transaction fees. Which is good if you have a large audience.

I’ve just finished setting up Stripe Elements https://stripe.com/gb/payments/elements for my product. I’d say if you’ve got the time it’s worth the effort cos the stripe dashboard is brilliant!

Stripe Checkout https://stripe.com/gb/payments/checkout looks a faster method

Overall I’d only use something like gumtoad for one time products or if I really didn’t have the time to do stripe subscriptions

Does anyone know the overhead of paddle or gumtoad in comparison to just setting up stripe ?
