Roast my newest project - Thumbs Up News

Hello everyone! I've been working on this project for a whole month and I've finally am on a stage where I can say it's MVP version. The idea of this project is to use a machine learning classifier to classify news (positive, negative) and show only positive news on the site.

I still need to work a few things before releasing the project:

  • Need to speed up the site
  • Fix some twitter og title issues
  • Add support for offline mode
  • Add SSL
  • Think about a decent title/slogan for the site - at the moment is pretty crappy "Your source of positive news"

Please let me know if you spot any problems or if you have any feedback on this project! Thanks a lot

Looks great! I really love the logo design!! I just played around a bit with it on my phone and here is some quick feedback:

  • the "back to top" button is floating in the middle of the screen on the right side… this feeld kinda wired, I'd place it at the bottom right corner of the screen
  • when a news article hasn't got much content, there's a huge space below the heading I the card; maybe consider changing the card's height based on the content so entries with less content have smaller cards
  • the "open the menu" button in the navbar is placed on the right side, even though the menu slides in on the left side of the screen. I saw a few websites do this before but I personally like it better if both the button and the actual menu are on the same side

Hope this feedback helps you optimize the side a bit! Just note that most of this is my own opinion and if you think it's better to do it another way, feel free to do that :)

Greetings

Thank you so much for the help @an the back button it's something I wanted to fix and kind of forgot haha thanks for the reminder.

Yeah I see your point, I'm using a grid system to keep the cards on the same row and that makes them all be the same size. I'll play around and see how do they look without the grid, not sure it it will break the look or if it will be even better haha

That's a great idea to cheer the World up. I love it. As an advice, I think it can't be good for your public to click on a positive article and get stuck in a paywall.

PS: It happened to me with the article on the Washington Post

You have a good point there, the annoying thing is that I'm using the RSS feed to scrape the title and description and the link is just sending users to the url provided by the feed.

This is just something that the Washington Post does which is annoying. Might need to remove it from the list 🤔
