What do you use to budget / manage your finances?
Hi everyone, I have an idea for a new budgeting app, but wanted to get your thoughts on the tools you use.
What budgeting tools do you use?
What do you LOVE about them?
What’s stopping them from being so perfect that you would never dream to switch to a different tool?
I've used two different ones on and off for a few years. YNAB and 22seven.
YNAB requires a lot more input as you have to capture the data or import whereas 22seven pulls the info from your accounts and investments automatically.
The big difference is that YNAB lets me plan as I have to think about how I spend money whereas 22seven tells me what went well/wrong after the fact.
I use YNAB, which allows you to apply "envelope budgeting". This is the way I've always approached personal finance (give money a job as YNAB likes to say). For years I used spreadsheets to do that, but it was messy and annoying.
I've been using YNAB for a year now, and I'm sold, even though I currently have to manually import my bank statements because of the Brexit.
I made a cli using Plaid to import my bank statements automatically (https://github.com/sowenjub/ynap) but since the Brexit, all connections to my banks are down. Hopefully, this will be resolved in the near future.
I have tried many in the past, but a lot repeat the same mistake of just throwing information at you without helping you make sense of it. More recently have tried Lunch Money and Money Dashboard.
