What analytics tool do you use?

I'm ready to ditch Google Analytics. What do you use and why?

Petr

I work for Behavee (https://behavee.com), which is an analytics tool with the ability to order PPC campaigns for a fee. We also integrate with Shopify if you have an e-commerce site and track some additional metrics for products in the product catalog. It is built on Matomo and includes all the plugins for heatmaps, A/B tests etc. If you have a Shopify site or would consider buy & outsource PPC campaigns, I can recommend you that.

If you want to self-host, you can set up a Matomo server yourself (it took me one day to install on Digital Ocean). The disadvantage is that some of the tools/plugins like heatmaps are quite expensive if you want to use them on your instance. Matomo also offers cloud hosting itself.

Then there is Phantom Analytics, Simple Analytics and others that are privacy focused (even though Matomo is also GDPR-friendly). If you are okay to pay and don't need advanced metrics, this can be for you.

Lastly, if you want to change Americans for Russians, look at Yandex.Metrica which has the same payment model as Google Analytics (free but they work with your data). The advantage is that they have also advanced tools included (e.g. heatmaps).

Hope this helps!

I've been using the essentials/basics:

  1. Google Analytics: the depth of analysis and comprehensiveness of GA just can't be beat for me. I love the events feature and flow tracking + cohort analysis.
  2. Metabase (business intelligence) - hooks to my database and provides custom dashboards.

Simple Analytics, it's not very comprehensive, but it has essentials. Example of my public analytics: https://simpleanalytics.com/arcade-hub.com

What features are a must and nice to haves for you?

More privacy (so probably no cookies) and performance (meaning load times) than GA are must-haves. Need to know page views, referrers, top pages, and screen sizes.

Nice to have: event tracking.

Just noticed this thread: I'm currently working on metrical.xyz, an alternative more privacy focused to Google Analytics.

It's been a year since I started building and using it and everyone can ask for an invite to the beta (and you can add up to 2 website and 50.000 visits free during beta!).

It has all the essentials in an easy to read dashboard. Plus: event tracking and no cookies banner to add 🙅‍♀️
