Are any artists / animators using Makerlog?
I wanted to ask around for you creative types out there who are using makerlog. What's your main form of artistic expression? And what are you currently working on?
For me I'm mainly shifting into animation. I want to animate as much as possible and eventually do a couple of short movies and start telling stories with my animations.
And currently I'm working on some simple tutorials for the software I mainly use for animation which is RoughAnimator (on iPad) and I didn't see many tutorials how to do more creative things with it, yet.
My main occupation is actually an engineer though and currently I'm product designer as my main gig. I|ve been mainly an engineer for the past 10 years. I figured, it's time to try another passion that I was always to insecure to go into fully.
I wonder if being a "tech person" is the reason why I'm here on makerlog. How do other creative types find their way here if any. :)
I went to medical school and started making animated videos of medical topics for fun. That's how i got into animation. I kept learning and after getting my doctor's degree, I started working as a freelance animator :P I am currently freelancing with a gaming company.
I am also building a DIY video tool with my friend (who is a programmer) that allows anyone to create animated video ads by just drag and drop. I am building another quick side project for DIY illustrations. You can drag and drop assets and characters and create custom illustrations for website/ onboarding etc. So that's what I am working on these days. I am also learning to program for fun. I started with C last year. Now learning python and javascript :)
For animation, I mainly use after effects. I tried making a jumping frog and fire animation on RoughAnimator. I love that app. You can try this tutorial by ben Marriott - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRXrL-8CTmg&t=82s He also has more tutorials on his channel and also a course on Motion Design School website. (motion design school also has free courses on after-effects if you want to learn motion graphics)
I would recommend getting "the animator's survival kit" by Richard Williams if you want to learn frame by frame animation. Also, this will help -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDqjIdI4bF4
You may also learn by breaking down and copying other expert animators' work for a start. :)
Hey Khushmeen! Nice to hear from a fellow animator.
I have also bought some courses on MotionDesignSchool for animation. It's quite good. Yet, I enjoy more the frame-by-frame work I do and less the After Effects animation. I use After Effects mainly to compose the final shots in the end, and combine or apply effects to my animations. I also own "The Animators Survival Kit" for 5 years, it is really a great resource.
The animation and illustration DIY tools you are working on sound very interesting, I would like to see the end result and support the launch if you plan to launch it on ProductHunt and other sites. :)
I am currently working on a RoughAnimator video tutorial to create textured effects. And a free brush pack that goes along with it to get people started.
@justgoscha Hey Goscha, Thank you I would love to share the final products with you.
And I would love to see your tutorial on creating textured effects! Sounds fun. Please share it with me whenever you publish it :)
I know this is late, but I am a full stack developer and I am learning design and animation fundamentals as a hobby
