How did you get your first users?

I am just about ready with the MVP of the product I am building (https://skillhq.io), and I was wondering how I should go about getting the first users. How did you get your first users?

Victor

For my product, pingr.io, I got them by posting in "weekly support thread" on producthunt & by regularly posting on indie hackers :)

So much of user acquisition and sales/marketing is based on the target demographic. For simple math, consider how Salesforce got their first users versus Facebook; different demographics, different things work.

Luis Nichol made the great comment "marketing is for when you're established and have users actively coming to you. Every startup has to do sales to actively acquire new users".

So, I think first thing is define your product, then your perfect customer, then what problem you solve for those customers, then where those customers spend time and talk about the problem.

Granted I'm far from an expert and don't have any users for my B2B startup so take it with a grain of salt.

For worktunes.co:

  • tweet it with some hashtags
  • Publish to makerlog
  • Publish to /r/sideproject
  • Publish to indiehackers
  • Send it to friends who can find it useful

Makerlog seems to have the best result thus far :)

For caproni.fm I got my first users through the Indie Hackers Puerto Rico community I run, some of my Twitter followers and giving away free webinars on how to start a podcast.

Ideally you do the process backwards, you first find the users and then build the product ;) However, I have been in your position many times.

I would suggest you focus on doing things that don't scale e.g. talking to people on by one, rather than doing marketing or big launches.

Wow, it seems we're building very similar products! Good luck with the launch! I am really curious about how it will go for you.

I think it would be cool to have separated landing with explanations of all the features. Also, twitter usually has a lot of reach if you explain the motivation within the thread.
