Ethical Tech Design
Is anyone interested in a place to focus on ethical design in software?
It's not enough to just complain about the tech giants. We need to create the web we want. That's not easy because most of the tools we have today are all built around a surveillance business model and advertising.
If enough people are interested I will create a small site where makers can discuss issues like designing for privacy and business models that respect users.
This does sound very interesting -- we're in an age where these things will matter increasingly.
I'd definitely be interested in participating though I wonder if it really needs its own site or if you could leverage an existing medium
@nibl One forum to consider is the Humane Tech Community. It's mostly a discussion forum, but long-form content can still be published there.
@egwindsor I should have mentioned the Humane Tech Community. I've been listening to "Your Undivided Attention" since it began. The forum is a very good place for general discussion of all related topics. It would be a good companion. A place to begin a topic.
However, the forum lacks the kind of focus that could help makers with practical implementation. I've worked with developers who are very aware of the topics around privacy and user data, but in their actual implementations might quickly turn to Google products. Maybe out of habit, or because they aren't sure what alternatives there are. Maybe they just want to get on developing, and not be held up.
People designing and building technology need a very focused approach specific to the technology, and audience they are serving. The discussions need to go deep on the specific area they are working in. After that, they need to know how to go from the theoretical to the practical implementation. That can be really difficult. It's far easier and more effective with other makers who understand the technology and challenges better than anyone else.

@poppacalypse Thanks, what are you referring to exactly? I’m not sure what to change (emails are sent by Convertkit)
@nibl in the "From:" field it shows: ethicaltech-request@mailmanlists.eu (which is fine) and email Subject: "confirm 274b……" - the latter was what looked like spam.
We now have a discussion mailing list where we can peer review each other's tech. You can sign up here
