Do you guys sell code?

Hi,

Do you guys sell any form of code? If so, do you sell it as a zip file or do you have any other alternative approach?

The code could be any framework/library/design system or anything that relates to code. Please let me know

P.S: I am trying to get some early users for PrivJs

Thanks!

A developer always does that. But do you mean rather from developer to developer?

So basically, it is not easily to say. It always depends on the project.

Eq. we sell customisation of existing OXID plug-ins or special solutions.

Often the code is then integrated directly into the system.

Since PrivJs is about selling open source, I'm sure you already know selling open source is hard by nature. For me, as I learn, it is about value add.

My product is aimed squarely at managing a software driven business, but because of what it deals with (all of your business data), I prefer to keep it open source and self-hosted.

Pricing is upfront on my landing page (really early stage) and I mention self-hosted too. But I will postpone the mention of open source to inner pages once I know the customer is really interested.

I think the reason why people want to buy a license (to open source software) is support, peace of mind that someone will answer queries when needed. This is very crucial for running businesses.

In my opinion brute force locking to open source does not work because of the open source license itself, distribution is a given.

yeah. The goal of PrivJs is not to lock the open-source contributions, but instead to open up newer opportunities of monetization.

For example: Consider react-router-dom it is a fantastic package, but what if the developer needs to earn something out of it? Wouldn't be better if he could create a "Pro" version of it (upcoming remix.run) and sell it via PrivJs? This way it would enact as a monetization opportunity for the developer. Also, people who needs the packages for free can always resort to the open source option.

The above being said, this is just one use case. Another user case would be for design systems like tailwindui & creative-tim templates. Currently, all they can do right now is sell code via code snippets or as zip files. PrivJs would help the sell the same as a npm package.

These are my initial thoughts for building PrivJs - but I would love to hear your feedback/criticism on the same..

@prasannamestha I think with the "pro" version you mean open core licensing which is what some well known foss work with.

In my opinion, as a solo developer who is also trying to make a business, I feel running two or more versions is hard. I prefer the sponsorship/Patreon ways or that I simply do not explicitly showcase my product's repo URL on any marketing page.

Customers can see that as an advantage on the pricing page, but that means they are interested enough to get to pricing. But that being said, there are surely some software where two versions make sense or a delayed open release make sense.

@brainless yeah, makes sense. The product might not really be apt for open source packages. But, it definitely is a game changer for design systems & UI component libraries

@prasannamestha As makers, the important thing is to try out with the real user. Reach out to creators of npm packages and ask them to join.
