August Town Hall -- Feedback Thread

Hi makers,

I've just published the town hall for this month, and this is the feedback thread for Makerlog's direction.

How are we doing, and what do you feel we could do better? Let me know below! 👇

Kudos on establishing yourself here in Puerto Rico :) Feels great to know there are other motivated to push through and make a better future.

I love the idea of focusing on building in public.

Growing the user base will be hard. Trying to feed of HN by posting there could be a good strategy. I saw that one your recent articles made it well on HN. Did that bring new users?

Regarding monetization, besides ads and Gold, do you have any other ideas or plans?

Yes! We have a couple of ideas in the pipeline.

  1. Upsells like a premium chat.
  2. Job boards once we grow bigger.
  3. Other products, like Caliper or Ads, which can be easily launched as separate ventures that help empower makers.
  4. We're fundamentally a community company, so products that help create or run communities. (A little vague, I know…)

Long term:

  1. A Maker Fund, where we invest in makers to help them start up -- although this is really long term
  2. B2B -- more on this next year

And yeah!, we're starting to focus on HN for marketing. Great traffic, huge surges of new users. Leilany is working on telling a lot of awesome stories.

Been quietly watching and I can see the changes, slowly but surely. imho the team has been ramping up and doing a terrific job with marketing!

It still loads a little slow for me, but I'm willing to put up with it because I really love this site and want to continue supporting it.

Speaking of support, I've been on ML's free plan for a year now. It's time I upgrade to Gold - brb. (Did not do so previously because it seemed to offer little more than just 'dark mode'.)

Hey, thanks so much for upgrading!

Also… About the site loading slow, I know… I'm pouring a lot of engineering effort to fix that! I'll DM
