It's about time for some rules!

Aye yo makers!

I've been seeing an uptick in spammy/low-value posts in Makerlog discussions lately, and I'm quite sick of it -- hence, I feel establishing some rules would be a good idea. I have a couple of rough ideas, and I hope y'all can provide some input:

  1. Give more than you take. Always seek to provide value in replies or threads.
  2. No spam/self-promotion allowed. Ask for feedback, and do it respectfully. We can tell when your post is basically a front for self-marketing. Share your product in the monthly What Are You Building threads to keep the forums tidy.
  3. Launching in discussions is alright, but you MUST be active on-site for at least three months pre-launch.

Thoughts welcome.

One thing I forgot to add: I will probably be implementing locked discussions & reasons soon, that way I can clearly moderate and point to a rulebook that everyone can see.

Feel your pain Sergio, maybe you could add the guidelines alongside the form in post discussion modal, so people can see them just as they are posting a discussion.

Another idea is prompts (or instructional placeholder text) that encourages better discussion..e.g. under the Post field, it could have a small description: "what lessons have you learned recently (that other makers can learn from)?"

or show tips on what makes an engaging discussion

I feel like these interval based "What are you building threads" get too long (hard to read / overwhelming) and the thing at the top gets all the attention. It's the same on other sites. It would be cool to have a dedicated page here. Monthly goals of Makerlog members. And before being allowed to post you have to comment 2-3 goals with feedback (unless you're the first to post because it's a chicken-egg situation).

I like testing other products and giving feedback, but it takes time and it seems some don't give any value.

@kaioelfke Monthly goals sound pretty brilliant, and could be a nice distinction from tasks.

Thanks for the feedback, will def discuss with @hector + team :)

This is a huge undertaking. I think you're on the right track.
