Have you had any media mentions? If so, how did it happen for you?

Hey,

I'm writing a new post for Where To Post and was wondering if received any mentions on other websites/media. How did you achieve it?

Yes, I did with Hello, Goodbye. There were a few (Smashing Mag, lifehacker) in the following weeks of my product hunt launch.

Did they find you or did you reach out ?

@spekulatius I don't know if they reached out first, because for the first 14 days I had my email not setup properly, so I didn't receive any emails 😆. So they found me, I had about 25K unique site visitors in those two weeks.

haha, @bcye, okay. Fair enough. But it sounds like they found you

Whenever it's happened for me it was usually after launching on PH or Reddit. Most times I wasn't even contacted I just saw a spike in traffic from a new source.

Yeah, I can imagine. Almost the same for me: Just random links from e.g. Life Hacker appearing… Trying to find out if there is a regularity or a way to improve it

I remember maker @jpfong was mentioned in lifehacker once!

Also wondering if @harrydry has any tips on getting these

Yeah, I guess @harrydry might have some ideas. Was ML mentioned anywhere more popular @sergio ?

@spekulatius Not yet, although it's been mentioned on IH (probably the biggest yet)

@sergio @spekulatius I think targeting a tight niche is the key here … Buget meal planner a great example of this. Got picked up by LifeHacker and a bunch of other places. Why? Because it was for a very specific group of people. People of low budgets! If it was just a generic meal planner would never have taken off.

For me, the key is using Buzzstream Discovery to find niche bloggers and then pitching really short emails with a link to you thing :)

@harrydry that sounds like a good idea. I'll give buzzstream discovery a try - haven't used it before.

Yep, lifehacker. If you're doing something B2C, you might get a mention. For example, fitness app, budget apps, something like that

@jpfong yeah, good point: I would assume for most of the media outlets B2C works much better than B2B… I seldom stumble upon b2b stuff on the same kind of sites.

@spekulatius I forgot to answer the question. It happens because I was retweeting Lifehacker content about the same domain as an app I had launched. You'll then be noticed by one of their writers who will decide to write or not an article. The feeling when multiple people are signing up is unbelievable 😀

@jpfong ah, so you got the attention of a writer by retweeting content of writers in the domain? I've tried the same (+ replies, etc.) for my browser extensions and had no mentions coming out of it :/ I guess it depends on the topic, project, etc.

@spekulatius Yes that's the strategy that worked for me. A bit of luck I guess

Great topic! None of my projects I launched (on ph + twitter) ever got any media coverage at all! That said, I'm really curious how any of you got it and how I can increase the chances for my upcoming ph launch for workoutserver.com 😊
