Do you consider language support important?

I was able to skyrocket my mobile app Floating Apps to millions of downloads by localizing it to more languages.

E.g., Japan is the second most important market for the paid version (right after the US). It only became so after I introduced the Japanese translation. Russia, Brazil, and others are also important and very sensitive to their native language.

There are around 4 billion people online, with only 1.15 billion having English as the first or second language.

I struggled with localizing my apps for years, so I decided to build #localazy and doing so publicly here on MakerLog :-).

Also, I wrote several posts about how language support and allowing users to change language is important.

I would be happy if you can help me to understand how you think about language support:

  • Do you consider language support important?
  • Do you include it (at least, for the future) in your plans when building your products?
  • Do you have any previous experience with it?
  • Have you ever used a translation management solution? What was your experience like?

If you want your project to be accessible to everyone then localization is important. I have baked it into to several projects I have worked on and can confidently say that you want to make this decision as early on as possible. Retrospectively adding it is much harder.

I have never used a management platform but only see them being used on larger projects where having one makes sense.

Just had a look at the platform you have created and it looks great. Trivl will be localized and it seems like a great fit being community powered.

@nblackburn Thanks a lot for your insight! Yeah, I first localized Floating Apps when it was quite a large app already, and it was painful. We designed Localazy for single developers and small teams, so it shouldn't be the big fat management solution. But I fully understand what you mean. My motivation for building it was that I'm not a big corporation. I need a highly-automated solution, not the one that expects me to have a manager dedicated to the localization task :-). Also, I'm a developer in my heart, and I rather spend time coding than taking care of localization, so I needed something where I can spend two months with code and still retain control over all changes.
