And today I asked myself, what do I need to do to get a good number of upvotes?

I have a couple of strategies when I launch my things.

  • Launch in public. Livestream the launch, make it a huge event, build anticipation.
  • Make the tagline slightly controversial. Causes comments which ranks you higher in the PH algorithm.
  • Use a nicely made GIF.

Screw upvotes, go for comments!

Of course you need upvotes but comments have a bigger influence on your ranking.

After recently launching Fwd on Product Hunt, I found:

  • Shipping in public. Tweet up some hype.
  • Focus on engaging with the community via the comments. Upvotes shouldn't be a success criteria.
  • Being featured is just a success

…which will also serve as a great learning tool for years to come. I wouldn't worry too much about the number of upvotes :)
