Marketing tips for a newbie?

Hey all!

I'm about to release my first paid product, a Twitter extension that allows people to fully customize the Twitter UI and color scheme.

Since I've never done this before, I'm not quite sure how I should go about marketing this. I want to have a solid marketing plan before I release it.

Do you have any tips/tricks you use to market your products?

James Kenny

Hey Jarod,

Congrats on the upcoming launch!! That's a really awesome step, for marketing advice check out, Marketing Examples by Harry Dry, it's a fantastic resource for marketing.

Also, worth checking out Everyone hates marketers

I suppose since it's a Twitter extension I'm assuming it's a chrome or firefox extension that works on twitter?

Your main audience will be on Twitter so I would think that's where the bulk of your marketing effort should go. Start showing off examples of what the UI / Colour schemes can do and make it look like.

Setup some Twitter searches to try and find people talking about the colour schemes and see if you can share what you have created (not your extension) the cool colour schemes you make with your extension. Then when they ask you how you introduce what you have created.

Maybe buying some Twitter ads could be another way to try and build your brand and awareness.

It's a long road with no short cuts. Best of luck!

@jamesmkenny +1 on Marketing Examples by Harry. It's absolutely fantastic.

In terms of having a marketing plan, I suggest you try and wing it. Don't pre-plan too much, it'll come across inorganic. Just have a general idea of what strategy you want to use but don't plan it to the letter.

@sergio +1 on that, I like the idea of just having a general idea of what my marketing looks like, it makes it easier to adapt to thing that are going on around you but also adding in new ideas and trying things out.

I love Marketing Examples, and the fact that most people in the community know about it, means their own techniques are working πŸ˜„

Hello Jarod, I'm in the same boat (or atleast started there a few months ago) and I'm still building the product. So I don't have any tips to share right now. But I understand better today because of two books: "Traction" and "Obviously Awesome".

For product you are currently building and the future ones that you intend to build:

  • I would strongly recommend picking up the "Traction" book by Gabriel Weinberg. It's almost a weekend read, but I would say take it slow.
  • If you want to see a preview of what you'll find in the book, I've not finished the book, but I've been making some notes here - https://define.run/traction-book
  • And keep a log of all marketing activities/ideas you have along with the progress you make(in terms of metrics as outcome). I just started doing this yesterday.

P.S: Watch out when you get the Traction book - there are two different books with the same name. Pick the one by the author specified above.

I think James' suggestion of "showing off examples of what the UI / Colour schemes can do" is the key to your success. I recently listened to the Indie Hackers podcast with Traf and he credits his recent success with iOS home screen icon sales to the "aesthetic" in what he promoted.

Quick idea for you: find some designers who could really build something impressive that showcase the product well. If you can't find them organically, pay some folks on Fiverr or Upwork to create some good ones.

You could also create some showcase themes around company design schemes (think Notion) and then send them notable/influential people from that company.

Best of luck!
