How did you come up with the name for your product(s)?
I am terrible at coming up with names for things. I always go for the absolute generic thing that sounds good.
Point in case:
- App Metrics - application perf metrics
- Audience - Email newsletters
This time around I couldn't think of anything for Primcloud, as my constraints were it had to have the .com available or at least easily purchased.
It has no special meaning, I literally just replaced the last 4 letters of my street name with cloud
. Primrose is my street name, Primcloud is my product name.
It ended up working out well because the definition for prim
is proper or precise.
What about yours?
I like your idea, I wasn't sure what Prim was…now it makes sense.
My rule of thumb:
- Either i have a genius pun idea on the service
- The name of what the thing does + random adjective
- Name of animal + service type
I think that's easy enough to find a domain with those attributes
I start with code names, I even have domains for some of the code names or I use a sub domain sometimes. I find it gives me time to start playing around with different ideas for names and usually it hits me as I am building it and working on it and then it's just a case of picking it up and moving off the code name to the new name.
My buddy and I are into domaining. We would look for 4 letter domains that we could do a branding play with words.
For example:
LZVO - Lazy Virtual office
KVZO - knowledge valuation zoning & optimization
PQXE - Private Questions Extended Edition
We would spot good domains and try to see what we can build from there.
I ain't going to lie, this is a pretty fantastic strategy. Although I think rememberability takes a hit, no?
@sbenitezb76 good domain works even better for SEO. You don't see a lot of 4 letter character domains, let alone one-word domains around.
Oooh, I actually really like this part of the project. Here is a good site to get the creative juices going: https://guide.onym.co/
But also I wrote a blogpost about my routine - beer+list+bustaname.com https://lunarlincoln.com/whats-in-a-name/
I start by writing down every word that relates to my project and then dive into the thesaurus and writing down all the synonyms. Now I take my giant word list and start combining things that rhyme, or have alliteration or see if the tail of one word matches with the head of another word, or maybe chopping part of one word and attaching it to another word. But you have to be careful. Once I was trying to combine (game + insanity = gamanity) and almost purchased the domain before I spoke it aloud to myself "Gay Manatee". Not that there's anything wrong with that, but its just not the website I was going for.
https://www.onelook.com allows you to search for words based on patterns, which sometimes helps. There are several domain name generator tools you can find on the internet, but I've never had luck with any of them generating anything interesting. My hand made approach takes time, and is tedious but its given me good results.
Run your favorite ideas by a few friends first to get their impression before you make any decisions.
I named PopDo that way because I wanted a short name that reflected that the application window pops down from the menu bar. The “Do" part is of course related to being a task/to-do list. So nothing fancy.
For worktunes.co I just wanted a self explanatory simple domain so I just tried things until I found one that was open and I liked. For pasteco.co I asked my gf to come up with a name because I had no idea what to call it 😅
