Who's making on the weekends ?
With a busy freelancing schedule during the week, I'm often forced to work on my own projects over the weekend. This is not great for burnout or staying motivated.
Knowing of other "weekend-makers" might help to keep us motivated. So what are you building and working on when you're supposed to be taking some time of rest ;) ?
I'll start ;)
I'm working on https://budgie.chat on the weekends. Super stoked about the communication hurdles it's solved for my remote team so far.
Hoping to get the Microsoft Teams integration finished today #biggoals #fingerscrossed
Just got an idea for an app, so this weekend is all about getting an MVP ready as soon as I can. Got lots of work to do during the weekdays so it's grinding time the next couple of weekends. But it's going to be so rewarding when I launch my first app
@dotramsey sounds exciting, would love to follow your progress so keep us updated ;)
@dotramsey I'm based in South Africa. A solid 8 hour time difference with most of the makers on here probably.
Currently, I'm having a lot to do with my freelance projects, so no real time for side projects unfortunately. But I do all of that with the goal to have more time for my projects in the future. Next is a very cool update for soundescape.io, which is already implemented from the technical side.
I work during the weekends but often on smaller fun projects to take my mind off of work/main projects I do during the week.
I usually call them Weekend Builds because I get 2 days to build whatever 😁
@benwrightdev Definitely, if I'm not having fun on the weekend projects I scrap it or I get burnt out.
I'm working on the my Responsive web design certificate so I can keep continuing through the Odin project. I'm working on getting Freelance work started, I'm being a bit slackish in that department, mostly because I'm procrastinating school work.
Recently started working on a new Idea :) I usually start with the frontend part, but from my experiences I'm more likely to ditch a side project as soon as it's landing page is created. So for a change I started with the backend part this time. I don't have much experience with writing backends so started learning more about nestjs and implementing anything that I'm learning straight to the app. I know that it will be a mess for a while but I also believe that I can turn it around as I keep learning. #Tidy
@nikitskulhari great idea!! And don't worry about writing clean code while still yet learning, it can break the fun of it. I've worked with NestJS on previous projects but find in a lot of cases it can be overkill.
My goto choice is usually Express, which is what I've used to build Budgie :)
@loubserian I do know express somewhat, but as a frontend dev it's hard when we don't know how to structure our backend app and as you know express is not opinionated at all, making it even harder to define a structure to it as everyone on the internet is using something different. That why I went with an overkill solution with a bit of predefined structure ;)
PS - Loving Nestjs a lot right now
Building something for yourself is always less tiresome than for the others, even if they pay you for it. I just try to keep it relaxed, mix it with short workouts and Twitter, and be conscious about my state of mind. No "serious" work after 9 PM is a strict rule for weekdays and weekends, and Pomodoro helps a lot, too.
I have a list of five daily tasks that help me move forward and I don't skip doing that on the weekend. This can be anything really. Side projects, fitness, social stuff, …
During the week days, I freelance for 40-ish hours. So week days are super busy, I still do my best to do my five daily tasks.
On saturdays and sunday I have two "off-days", at least from my regular freelancing gig. I'll still do my five daily tasks. Since those tasks actually help me move forward and reach my goals, I don't feel overworked or burned out. I can tackle bigger tasks on the weekend. It is challenging but as I see the progress I continue doing it.
Working out a lot (always on my list too), staying hydrated and eating well (usually healthy) keeps me sane, too :D
Same here! 😅 I can't stop working completely, when I'm not designing logos for #logology, I write books (at least I try!). But as we say in French "work is health"! ✌️It's exciting to have passions and to feel that you can work on week-ends easily.
