What are you building this month? [October 2020]

So what are your plans for this month? Taking time off from working or business as usual? Continuing building and growing your current projects or starting something new? Still deciding what to do?

Reply below 👇 (and don't be chintzy with the details 😉)

Simon Chiu

Had to look up what "chintzy" meant… 😂

Goals for October 2020

  • Continue polishing Eager.app (a helpdesk / knowledge base app)
  • Work on the marketing aspect for the app
  • Gain +25 prelaunch emails (feel free to help me out!)
  • Make it through at least 50% of a Flutter course I've been planning on doing

Some confessions

  • I bought TWO domains for side projects in September. So I'll be listing some old unused domains for sale somewhere (have to first come to terms with this first).

I was looking for an email API for inbound emails. what service do you use for emails?

Simon Chiu

@spedix For inbound emails, I use a set of my own mx servers that's served by postfix. What this does is that it then forwards the email to Rails (which runs Eager.app). Rails has a built-in framework to handle inbound emails (ActionMailbox).

For outbound, I have several servers that is in rotation (to handle IP blacklisting), so we don't have extra costs associated with sending emails, which could be considerable.

Depending on the service you're trying to build, it may makes sense to build your own vs use an API.

Mailgun, and even Amazon, have their own services for inbound email. But if your only problem is inbound (and not outbound which requires a bunch of tuning), it's actually quite easy to throw up 2 small VPS (eg. Vultr, Digital Ocean, Linode, etc) and have them process the email via Postfix.

The configuration is a little bit more, so it takes a bit of trial and error.

Feel free to ping me on Twitter if you have any questions (@geetfun).

This looks great, I use helpscout for taskbill but I’m not overly happy with the docs site and the way it looks. I know it can be customize via custom ccs but it looks like a lot of work that I haven’t had time for yet. So I’m interested in seeing how easy it is to make my doc site look good without to much hassle with your product.

Hey what is your product tech stack? I saw you mentioned Rails above. Whats the rest?

@petrs Thanks!

@brainless The main part of the app (all the dynamic components, backend) are all running on Rails edge (the master branch version). Other than that, the app comprises of 5 components with some specific technical needs:

  1. Shared Inbox - outbound and inbound mail servers on Postfix and Haraka with some custom code & config for handling routing / anti-spam and anti-virus heuristics and for ensuring deliverability
  2. Documentation Site - Reverse proxy nginx for customer custom-domain SSL certificate issuing (with Let's Encrypt)
  3. Notification Feed - Plain JavaScript, Cloudflare CDN for widget caching
  4. Help Widget - Plain JavaScript, Cloudflare CDN for widget caching
  5. Sales website - static website with gohugo.io

Within Rails - Stimulus JS, jQuery, Bootstrap

Whole thing is hosted on 3 dedicated servers and ~7-10 VPS. Extra servers for various functions like reverse proxy, multiple mail servers for redundancy / warming up new IP addresses (for deliverability) at all times.

Happy to discuss infrastructure design!

Sumit Datta

@geetfun I guess I take very similar infrastructure level choices, CloudFlare, nginx, Let's Encrypt, Postfix etc.

My language stack is composed of Python and JavaScript, and I use React or Preact (if I need a tiny app).

Pitch: Manage databases without knowing SQL

I am building the same product (hurray for sticking to it) for 7 months now. dwata has surely matured and now I am trying to finish authentication/authorization features so that I can get adoption.

Goals

  • Encourage a CTO from a 40 people German company to adopt the product
  • Reach out to more founders
  • Finish local setup scripts and documentation for those who have shown interest to try
  • Aim for Grouping, Aggregates, Pivots and Formulas, all without knowing SQL

I would love feedback from all of you here who might have had to do queries, even simple looking ones like "Show me Orders from last year where Item value was above $50" - that usually needs 3 tables to be JOINed in SQL. dwata can do that automatically for you.

Thanks

Looks very solid. Have you done a Show HN on HackerNews? The audience of the open source version (which might expose you to enterprise customers) seems to be right there.

Project looks very nice, by the way.

Sumit Datta

@geetfun Hey Simon, yes Show HN has given me tiny traction but I will keep doing it. I get more GitHub stars in 1 day from there (4-6) than anywhere else. As the messaging becomes clearer I think the traction will improve. Thanks a lot for the encouragement!

Is this something like Metabase? What would you say are the main differences?

Sumit Datta

@petrs Hey Petr, that is a good question, I get it frequently. There are a whole group of products like Metabase, ReTool, BaseDash, ActionDesk, etc. which are in this same domain. I think eventually there will be a lot of overlap.

How dwata is different to start with is the 100% lack of SQL. All other tools need you to jump into SQL when the query gets a little complex - merge (JOIN) 2 or more tables, fan out data (1 to Many JOIN), grouping, aggregate. This makes them hard for non-technical people.

In dwata, there is no SQL visible or editable. The software understands and builds SQL for you depending on what actions you take on the UI. This is a big difference in the core engineering of the product since it goes much deeper in understanding the database that other products and helps non-technical people in a way that is not possible at the moment.

@brainless no it's not live yet. I am working on some approvals so can't launch yet.

As well as continuing to work on scaling the monitoring engine for Downtime Monkey I've started work on a new project - Twitter as a service. The idea is to provide fully managed Twitter for businesses and individuals who don't have the time, knowledge or inclination to do it themselves.

I've completed a basic version and am testing it on a few of my own accounts at the minute. This month I aim to roll it out to a few clients I run SEO campaigns for before getting it out there.

A lot of businesses don't want to manage their marketing/promotion/ads, social media etc. So if you execute well I think the market is there.

Still working on Gigle, the "Google" for gigs!

With 1 search, instantly find jobs from all of the top freelance sites: Upwork, Toptal, Flexjobs, Fiverr, Solidgigs, Freelancer, Taskrabbit, Guru, and more.

I want to help make it easier for new freelancers -- who typically don't have a built-in client base -- to find their first gig(s). For now, I'm focusing on saving people time searching for jobs that match their criteria. Currently, there's no way to do that without searching every site separately. What a headache! If I can even help people cut down on the hours spent just doing searches, I'll take that as a win.

I'll also be publishing a newsletter called "The Daily Gigle". It'll be a curated digest of freelance gigs posted by top employers, plus tips from top freelancers on how they got started and what they learned on their way to finding success.

I am looking for gigs to keep lights on while I am bootstrapping my product. So I will watch out for your search. I signed up for early access. Cheers!

Business as usual for me.

  • We're building our authentication and payments platform EasyAuth.
  • We finally set a hard date for the launch — Oct 31st.
  • We're building Stripe, Zapier, Sendgrid integrations along with passwordless logins.
  • We also got into an accelerator program and are doing a bootcamp now.

I didn't have as much time as I wished to work on Soundescape, as I spent more time than planned on new Photogram features. Anyway I am happy with the progress I've made: I started implementing a new UI/UX for the main part of the app, which is based on feedback and hotjar recordings gathered from my first "marketing strategy" (if that's what you call posting valuable content to relevant sub-reddits to find early adopters). I also decided to postpone my PH launch, as I want to focus on a different customer segment for now. In October, I want to finish the new UI (which is already nearly finished) and plan and execute marketing strategy II, hopefully reaching the traction goals I've set.

Hi Sergio,

My plan for this month is to invest more time in building and recreating my own personal website with NextJS. I use Gatsby now, but I want to learn and use NextJS more often in the future. So this is an interesting exercise. Besides that, I plan to participate in the Hacktoberfest. What about you?

For certain use cases, the switch from Gatsby to Next can feel like a huge productitivy boost and is for sure a lot of fun! 🚀 Just out of interest: Do you already use some sort of CMS?

@scriptifyjs No, I don't (yet). I am thinking about giving https://www.storyblok.com/ a try, or can you recommend me one?

@natterstefan Storyblok looks cool, didn't use it though. I've had very good experiences with DatoCMS for more traditional content oriented sites (like blogs and landing pages) and for more advanced, app-like use cases Strapi, which I really fell in love with lastly. I'd also keep (Webiny)[https://www.webiny.com/] on the radar, it's far from being as mature as Strapi, but it's still pretty young.

Stefan Natter

@scriptifyjs Thanks, I've some people in my circle who used DatoCMS too. I've never used it, but it looks promising. Currently, I work with lorem ipsum content until I am happy with some of the basics. Then I am gonna decide which headless CMS I use. Thanks for the links and your opinion.

I'm working on growing TaskBill.io. It has moved beyond MVP after getting feedback from real clients and now I'm ready to start a marketing push. I need to design some landing pages and work on SEO. I'm also working on starting an affiliate program to try and grow the client base as well.

This month I have been already productive:

  • I put a small poll app online to get myself a good shipping momentum (announcement on IH)
  • I put together an article about AI in Python
  • And my plan is to work hard this month to get some progress in writing my book Efficient developer (which I didn't work on lately as much as I wanted)

Hey, everyone.

For this month, I will working on the following projects:-

  1. I built a new project, Learningin.tech which will have major focus. I need to make sure that it reaches the people who need it the most. It is a free resource to learn new technologies!

  2. For Designtack, I will be building more exclusive content marketing guides for the users to simplify their content marketing problems.

  3. For my newsletter, Psych, I will be diving deep into more psychological insights and studies which can help our lives. Very interesting, for sure!

And have University work to manage too. But we are makers, so let's do this!

Adding basic keyframes to the video editor, focused on the ken burns effect.

I am recreating a similar UX to Canva/Sketch in terms of the artboard, grouping elements, measurements between elements.

Releasing free video editing tools as a marketing play. Creating more content to drive some SEO traffic and make sales.

You can play around with what I've built in the free demo, no account required https://storycreatorapp.com/demo

Have you looked at Transferwise for funds transfer? Found their exchange rate spreads to be quite reasonable and been relatively straightforward.

PayPal's finality in their answer is a bit unnerving sometimes. No recourse even if they made a mistake.

With @exdeve, we have just launched Undersend. It's an email marketing platform based on users' activities for SASS web apps. It's time to focus on marketing. In October, we want to:

  • Improve Landing Page content - make it more clear and increase conversion
  • Start a cold mailing
  • Add our app to products listing (like BetaPage, BetaList, etc.)
  • Setup Google Ads

Our product clariti.app is almost set for launch. We are testing our ad strategy with different platforms. In the meantime, we are also adding another feature to our product called orbit chat. This feature allows the users of our product to easily converse with nonusers. This will help improve the versatility of Clariti.

I'm focused on networking and team building. Looking to find the right technical cofounder to help build yocloud.app with me. I'll be taking many lunch club meetings, connecting on twitter, OpenLand, MakerLog, IndieHackers and Kismet. Any additional suggestions?

I'll also be exploring launch strategies for webpage. Seeking a way to capture physical address from user on website interaction + email address to inform user + neighbor users when app is launched in their building. Strategizing calculated launches for locations w/ highest anticipated interaction with product.
